The village of Ohé en Laak, situated between the beautifull Belgian Maaseik and the "white town" Thorn, has a clear amount of culture and art-historical treasures to offer.
Discovering 'de Maasplassen' by bike is pure enjoying and relaxing. There is a network of bicycle routes, ostly car-free, connected to bicycle routes in Belgium and Germany.
Four large gravel-lakes are also located in Ohé en Laak; the 'Dilkens' lake, the 'Teggerse' lake (at Laak), the
'Schroevendaalse' lake (at Ohé) and the Mill lake.
The 'Teggerse' lake and the 'Schroevendaalse' lake are beautifull hiking areas that are also suitable for fishermen and bird-watchers. The Maasplassen area is covered by water for 3500 ha.
Around the Sangershoeve are several large shopping centers which offer space for specialty stores and unique shops where you can shop. During the weekly markets and fairs you will have a great shopping experience. Within cycling distance, are the Designer Outlet Roermond (16 km) and Maasmechelen Village in Belgium (20km).
Castle Hasselholt
Hasselholt (called 'het Geudje' by locals) is a beatiful small castle that is private property.
It is dated from 1548 and a nice local renaissance-frontage from the year 1651. Nowadays, Hasselholt is inhabited by Baron Van Hövell tot Westerflier.
The castle was originally built in late-gothic style, with here and there some renaissance style.
With the restauration in 1970, the castle was tided up considerably, and sure is worth passing by cycling or hiking.
Hompesche Mill
This mill dates from 1722.
Earl Reinier Vincent van Hompesch, who owned Stevensweert and Ohé en Laak since 1917, had this large mill build for 2625 'rijksdaalders' (worth 2 guilders and 50 cents).
The mill's height is 37 meters including sails and has 8 stories. These are reachable through steep narrow stairs.
The lower part used to be a prison; above is the entry where an oilmill was situated.
There were attics for grainstorage, storage of grounded flour and a stone-attic with 3 pairs of heavy grinding stones.
